History of Shepherds Food Market
This business came into the family when Henry Schneck, approx. 1883 bought a small store in Sagetown, small village  in southwest  portion of the Town of Southport, Chemung County, NY.  He soon made the business a going concern, taking a grocery wagon on the road, selling and bartering with the farmers in the surrounding hills. Saturdays were reserved for a trip to Elmira,  buying supplies and trading eggs and butter  aquired from customers on his routes.
He was known to have some of the best horses in the area, winning many races on Saturday afternoon on his way home from town,  running on the old Plank Road.
Slowing down after many years, sold business to son-in-law, Sid Shepherd, Sr.  in 1934. Sid moved family (wife and 2 children) to house side of the store, Henry & wife Minnie moved into apartment upstairs.

As business had deteriorated, Sid Sr. started the routes again, only this time using a Panel Truck.  Mon., Wed. Fri., went out and took orders.  The family would work together and put the orders , and they would be delivered next day.  Saturday also was Elmira day to take eggs & butter into stores there.  Also, pick up merchandise for store.

After WWII, many changes came to the grocery business, Super Markets and “Self-Service.”  To keep up, Sid, Jr. partnered with father, Sid, Sr. and purchased store in Pine City, at foot of Dry Run Road, 1953.  Sid, Jr. learned meat cutting the hard way, on the job.  Parking was big problem so when a larger store down the road one half mile came up for sale, Sid, Jr, bought it with the backing of Sid, Sr., who was ill. (1967)

Many alterations and add-on have brought the store up to its present day operation.  With the emphasis on fresh meat and custom cutting, Sid, Jr. son, Marc has kept up with the food trends and still offers fresh cut meats and personal service. Marc bought the store from father, Sid, Jr. in 2000.  He is the fourth generation to keep the Grocery Business in the family.
